The digital literacy strategy of the European Union announced and introduced \u201cStrengthening Skills Intelligence\u201d and \u201cIncreasing STEM graduates, fostering entrepreneurial and transversal skills\u201d as two of the twelve actions in the skills revolution that is needed \u201cto ensure people can thrive in the green and digital transitions, and to help in the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic\u201d. <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--ast-global-color-4)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Data literacy<\/mark><\/strong> is closely related to and dependent on other informatics skills and competencies, especially digital literacy.<br><br>The European Commission outlined ten key areas for Informatics in primary education: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Data and information <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Algorithms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Programming <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Computing systems <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Networks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People\u2013system interface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design and development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Modelling and simulation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awareness and empowerment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety and security. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there&#8217;s limited research on data\/information education for lower primary school levels (grades 1-4, ages 6-10). Only Poland addresses this level, leaving out 6- to 10-year-olds from data education in other countries. Lessons from scarce research on higher primary school levels (grade 5 and up) suggest caution in directly applying methods from higher education to younger children. The (geo)spatial data domain is one area that has developed learning outcomes for lower primary school levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>DIRECTORS project<\/strong> aims to implement, test, and evaluate an <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--ast-global-color-4)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">educational approach for teaching data to primary school children<\/mark><\/strong>, aligning with the EU&#8217;s future data literacy needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-e41e82ce\"><h2 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-6-color\">Objectives<\/mark><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The <strong><mark style=\"background-color:var(--ast-global-color-4)\" class=\"has-inline-color\">DIRECTORS project<\/mark><\/strong> has the objective to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>develop, implement and evaluate a new teaching approach to advance the (open) data literacy of ISCED level 1 pupils (pupils).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>develop, implement and evaluate innovative quality teaching material and Open Educational Resources (OER) to support teachers in teaching (open) data literacy at the ISCED level 1.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The project focuses on primary education, which is education classified in the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) Level 1.
