Invitation to a seminar for teachers on data literacy and data teaching methods

The Erasmus+ DIRECTORS (DIgital data-dRiven EduCaTion fOR kids) project team, in cooperation with FER’s science popularization program ŠUZA, invites everyone interested, especially computer science and primary school teachers, to a seminar on data literacy and data teaching methods. With this seminar, we want to present to teachers activities and educational materials for teaching data literacy, which were created as part of the Erasmus+ DIRECTORS (DIgital data-dRiven EduCaTion fOR kids) project, which began at the end of 2023. As part of the project, workshops for lower primary school children have been developed (3 workshops, 2 meetings each), and in each workshop, children go through the entire data life cycle, from creating or collecting, through processing and analysis, to critical thinking and drawing conclusions about data and based on data. A more detailed description of the developed workshops can be found in the flyer on this page. We want to offer teachers adaptable materials that they can partially or fully incorporate into their teaching according to their needs. The materials were developed in accordance with the learning outcomes in lower primary school. During this school year, the workshops were experimentally implemented in two primary schools in Croatia and in three primary schools in the Netherlands (in cooperation with the project partner, Delft University of Technology).

The seminar will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at FER (Unska ulica 3), in hall A111, starting at 7 p.m. The expected duration is 90 minutes. In addition to socializing in person, you will also be able to join us online, via video conference. The seminar will be conducted by Assoc. Prof. Ivana Bosnić (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing) and Asst. Prof. Ana Kuveždić Divjak (Faculty of Geodesy), who designed the materials in collaboration with colleagues from the Netherlands and experimentally conducted workshops in Croatian schools.

We would be happy to invite teachers who show interest and engage in the use of these materials to present their experiences and practical examples at a joint webinar in the fall of this year, with the participation of colleagues from Croatia and the Netherlands. This will also be an excellent opportunity for international networking and exchange of good practices. We believe that this seminar will be useful for informatics and primary education teachers in developing competences for teaching data literacy and will provide them with concrete guidelines and materials for the simplest implementation of data-based teaching.

This seminar is also included in the catalogue of professional conferences of the Education and Teacher Training Agency. Teachers of IT and primary education can register through their system (register for live participation / register for online participation), so that ETTA can issue them with an official certificate of participation. All others are asked to fill out the registration form [https://forms.gle/Q6oPcHhJQcwzVMs89] for better organization of the event.
